An exchange or broker is first and foremost third-party custody: the provider usually holds the keys until you pay out. Whether that suits you is the role question Broker, exchange, Bitcoin-only app — not the size of the order book. Derivatives and leverage are a second product with their own risk of total loss.

Coinbase

US-listed CEX with extensive public documentation; Separate entry-level and advanced interfaces.

+ Strengths

Detailed public documentation · additional transparency obligations as a listed company

− Limits

Entry-level fees are comparatively high · Coin selection smaller than some competitors

CEXCustody: ProviderRegulation: MiCA-CASP IE

Bitvavo

European CEX with Euro spot and public AFM/MiCA documentation — closer to everyday life in the Germany, Austria and Switzerland than a purely international order book.

+ Strengths

Euro markets and public fee side MiCA-CASP according to provider (AFM)

− Limits

Fewer pairs than the largest international CEX · Derivatives are not the core

CEXEuro couplesRegulation: MiCA-CASP NL

21bitcoin

Bitcoin-only broker from the Germany, Austria and Switzerland region. Recurring investment plan and auto-invest instead of a multi-asset order book.

+ Strengths

Clear Bitcoin focus · MiCA-CASP according to provider (FMA)

− Limits

No multi-asset order book · different role than a CEX

BrokersBitcoin onlyRegulation: MiCA-CASP AT

Trade Republic

Germany, Austria and Switzerland broker with app, securities and crypto - not a classic CEX with its own order book universe.

+ Strengths

Everyday portfolio management in one app · MiCA-CASP according to execution principles · BaFin

− Limits

Crypto is a product alongside securities · less trading depth than a CEX order book

BrokersMulti-assetRegulation: MiCA-CASP DE

Scalable Capital

Germany, Austria and Switzerland broker with banking license according to the provider; Crypto often via ETPs instead of spot coins on a CEX.

+ Strengths

Broker and banking license (BaFin/ECB according to provider) · Everyday securities operations

− Limits

Crypto ETP is not the same as spot on a CEX · MiCA-CASP unclear in characteristics

BrokersCrypto ETPSupervision: BaFin

Commercial note: “Go to offer” links (↗) can trigger a commission — selection, order and classification remain unaffected.

CASP information is a snapshot from the catalog and public register. They do not replace your own check as to whether the product you see is even offered in your country. Large international CEXs without partner links on this page - such as Binance, Kraken, OKX, Bybit - are still in the comparison table.

crypto exchange card programs are included Map comparison and in the guide Learn to read fees. Perpetual markets — centralized or decentralized — explained Understanding perpetual DEXs.

Trading models: broker, centralized exchange and perp DEX

Brokers, centralized exchanges and perp DEXs serve different purposes. A broker offers or intermediates a purchase; an exchange can match orders; a perp DEX provides derivatives positions. The following explanation helps you select the desired product before comparing individual costs.

One central exchange (CEX) merges orders and usually keeps the keys until you pay out. Coinbase Advanced Trade and Bitvavo are examples of this role in this short list - with varying degrees of proximity to everyday Euro life, not with a quality grade.

A Brokers often markets the interface: an app, securities account or recurring investment plan. The provider or partner still holds the key. Trade Republic and Scalable Capital belong in this drawer, even if crypto sits next to securities in the app. 21bitcoin is a broker and at the same time Bitcoin-only - that's scope, not quality. In detail: Broker, exchange, Bitcoin-only app.

A Perp DEX is another product again: leverage, margin, funding, liquidation. Self-custody does not eliminate protocol risk. That's not what this short list is for. The entry is in Understanding perpetual DEXs. In the comparison table, Perps are a platform role of their own, not fifth place behind Coinbase.

If you mix the three roles, you compare the spread in simple buy with maker/taker and with funding. That's three bills. Germany, Austria and Switzerland versus international is the same trap in a different flag: Brokers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland vs international exchanges.

KYC and identity verification

KYC (Know Your Customer) is the verification of identity before fiat goes in or out — often before you even trade. It's not a security note for you. It is an obligation of the provider towards supervision and payment service providers.

What you can check without taking legal advice from us:

  • Is an ID or video ID required before SEPA or card takes effect?
  • Does this apply to your country of residence, or just to another region of the app?
  • There is a MiCA CASP entry in the public ESMA register — and for which entity?

Check a register entry using the full name of the contractual entity, its status and listed services. These details help you assess the provider. They do not guarantee safe price performance and replace neither product terms nor verification of the specific withdrawal route.

Identity verification establishes account access and possible approvals, not custody automatically. For a custodial account, the provider or its partner manages the balance. An external withdrawal can transfer it to your own wallet if the product, asset and network support that route.

Total costs: purchase quote, trading and withdrawal

Three cost areas are particularly relevant to a purchase: the quoted price including any spread, additional trading fees and subsequent withdrawal. Depending on the payment route, deposit or currency fees may also apply. Read the confirmation of the specific transaction alongside the current price list.

Spread in Simple Buy. The purchase price displayed often already includes the margin. “EUR 0 Commission” can be true and still expensive if the price is next to the market. Broker apps use this model more often than an order book.

Makers and takers. In the order book, you pay (or receive) a rate for whether your order takes or provides liquidity. The taker rate for EUR 1,000 is a different number than the spread in the app. Squeezing both into one “cheapest exchange” cell is the misconception from the FAQ below.

Payout and network. The trade may seem cheap, but the on-chain fee or limit afterwards may not. This belongs in the Withdrawal cell, not the Hero sentence.

We're not putting any percentages here that will change tomorrow. The current catalog cells are on the product pages and in the Comparison table. Card programs on the same platform are a second bill: Learn to read fees.

Two other locations missing from the Hero row: Inactivity and Payment method. Some brokers charge dormant fees or stagger the spread according to payment method (SEPA, card, real time). This doesn't change the role — CEX remains CEX — but it changes the bill for the same coin. That's why we should first look at the question of roles, then at the cell, not the other way around.

If you only read the five cards above, you will see a mix of roles, not a market. Large international CEXs without partner links on this page remain visible in the table. A missing card is not a devaluation. An existing card is not an award. The numbers count, just like with the hardware brands.

Germany, Austria and Switzerland everyday life against international order book is the same distinction in a different flag. Spread, ETP and taker rate are in Brokers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland vs international exchanges as cells next to each other - without test winners and without invented laboratory values.

A broker and order-book exchange can be compared on costs when purchase amount, asset and end state match. Compare the quantity actually received after all relevant fees. A derivatives position and a coin purchase serve different purposes; a single fee rate does not capture that distinction.

KYC before the first euro says nothing about withdrawal. Some apps check you early and still document the payout briefly. The cells are on the product side and in the Comparison table. Perps stay outside: Understanding perpetual DEXs.

In practice: turn the overview into a suitable shortlist

First select the purchase object and route: a simple app purchase, order-book trading or a securities account. Then check availability for your residence, payment method and custody. This produces a shortlist of offerings whose functions fit your plan.

If you plan to hold assets long term in your own wallet, include withdrawal network, minimum amount, fees and backup method in your selection. If you need to document transactions later, also check export format and available history. These criteria may matter more than one low trading rate.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Exchange X missing?

This page is a short list according to three axes, not a directory. Further names can be found under Compare and Discover.

Does MiCA-CASP mean “safe for me”?

No. A register entry is supervisory information, not suitability and not a guarantee against loss.

Is the largest exchange the cheapest?

Not necessarily. Maker/Taker, Simple Buy spreads and withdrawal fees are different lines. Size is liquidity, not price.
