Crypto Brokers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland vs International Exchanges

Compare DACH brokers and international exchanges: check coins or ETPs, total costs, wallet withdrawals, export formats and provider status.

Published Updated
In this guide

The comparison table sorts regardless of affiliate commission — see Methodology: Crypto Exchanges. This text does not choose a test winner and does not replace your own practical test.

A provider based in Germany or Austria may offer app purchases, an order book or crypto ETPs. An international exchange may also provide a simple purchase interface. Location alone therefore explains neither the purchase product nor the costs. This guide covers the differences that matter for buying and later withdrawing.

The Crypto exchange comparison distinguishes platform types. For Scalable Capital the order types entry is: Broker orders on crypto ETPs (no native spot order book). Here you buy a security linked to Bitcoin. According to the documented features, you cannot withdraw Bitcoin to your own wallet.

The conceptual level — who holds the key, who is just the surface — is in Crypto Broker vs Exchange vs Bitcoin App: The Differences. This is about the cellsthat you actually compare in the hub: cost model, order type, payout, tax report format, MiCA label. All numbers and labels are below Catalog status 2026-08-15, no own measurement and no laboratory report.

Reading

Flag ≠ treaty. Cells first.

teaching case

Scalable: ETP, not a spot coin.

Costs

Spread and taker are different models.

DACH offerings: everyday convenience and comparison limits

Pros

  • Onboarding, language and SEPA are often closer to everyday DE life than in a purely international CEX.
  • The cost model is often shown in the table as: spread (plus flat if applicable), not as maker/taker - you see the markup in the price, not in a fee scale.
  • Bitcoin-only apps like 21bitcoin are their own profile, not a “smaller Kraken”.
  • Tax report DE is on several Germany, Austria and Switzerland lines native documented - as a format, not as tax advice.

Cons

  • “Germany, Austria and Switzerland” or a license abbreviation none Security proof and not proof that you hold coins.
  • Asset size, order book depth and payout to your own wallet can be narrower - read the cell, not accept it.
  • A crypto ETP in a securities account is legally different from a spot purchase followed by a withdrawal. Mixing them compares a coin with a security.
  • The tables show conditions as of 15 August 2026. Before buying, check current terms for your account and residence.

ETP or coin: what you actually buy

Two brokers can have the same app aesthetic and still be two contracts. BISON, Bitpanda and 21bitcoin The characteristics are spread brokers with documented payouts to your own wallet. Scalable Capital is a broker whose crypto path is in terms of features Broker orders on crypto ETPs are — explicitly no native spot order book.

This is the reading guide, not a rating. An ETP can fit into a securities portfolio, bring a native tax report and still none Be Bitcoin that you can send to a hardware wallet. According to features: Payout your own wallet at Scalable No. SEPA deposit: bank transfer (SEPA) only, without the card and instant lines that other Germany, Austria and Switzerland apps carry.

Trade Republic belongs to the same everyday question, but in a different cell: limit and market orders in the app, withdrawal of your own wallet yes (plus network fee), native tax report, registered office in Germany, SEPA plus SEPA Instant and card. This is everyday brokerage life with crypto as a product alongside securities - still no CEX order book. The role basis remains the guide to brokers and crypto exchanges; The brand short list without ranking is in 5 Crypto Platforms: An Overview for 2026.

Catalog status 2026-08-15: Costs for EUR 1,000 one-time purchase

The methodology calculates BTC/EUR, market order or taker, basic level, without volume discount. What follows is this Catalog, not our stopwatch. One-time purchase means: one-time amount, coins remain on the platform - payout is a second line.

Platform Costs (EUR 1,000 one-time purchase) Cost model (catalog)
21bitcoin EUR 14.90 · 1.49% Spread spread
BISON EUR 12.50 · 1.25% Spread spread
Bitpanda EUR 14.90 · 1.49% Spread spread
Scalable Capital EUR 10.89 · EUR 0.99 Flat + 0.99% Spread Spread + EUR 0.99 Flat
OKX EUR 1.00 · 0.1% Taker Order book
Coinbase Advanced Trade EUR 6.00 · 0.6% Taker Order book
Kraken EUR 8.00 · 0.8% Taker Order book

Trade Republic's cost line is in the features Unknown — therefore no cost line for TR. We do not provide an estimate. The methodology says the same thing: if the measurement is missing, the column remains empty, not zero.

The table shows historical cost components for a defined purchase scenario. A spread and a taker fee arise differently. A fair comparison nevertheless needs the same starting amount and end state: how much of the desired asset do you receive after all relevant costs? Also account for deposits, currency conversion and any withdrawal.

The same applies to Scalable: EUR 10.89 is in the characteristics as All in from EUR 0.99 Flat plus 0.99% Spread — and the product remains an ETP. A more favorable scenario does not turn the security into a coin.

Sources of fee cells (catalogue, not our measurement): 21bitcoin Fees, BISON fees, Bitpanda Fees, OKX Fees, Kraken Fee Schedule, Coinbase Advanced Trade fees, Scalable trading fees.

Read pricing model and order type together

According to features:

  • Spread: 21bitcoin, BISON, Bitpanda.
  • Spread + Flat: Scalable Capital (EUR 0.99) and Trade Republic (EUR 1) — TR without quantified scenario costs.
  • Order book: Kraken, OKX, Coinbase Advanced Trade.

Order types (catalogue, excerpt):

  • 21bitcoin: Market and limit purchases in the app.
  • BISON: Market, limit and stop in the app.
  • Bitpanda: Market and limit buying in the app.
  • Trade Republic: Limit and market orders in the app.
  • Scalable Capital: Broker orders on crypto ETPs (no native spot order book).
  • Kraken: Limit, Market, Stop, Trailing Stop.
  • OKX: Limit, Market, Conditional, OCO.
  • Coinbase Advanced Trade: Limit, Market, Stop Limit.

The Germany, Austria and Switzerland brokers’ app orders are not evidence of a native spot order book. Scalable says this explicitly. Trade Republic says “in the app”. Kraken, OKX and Coinbase Advanced Trade describe classic order book types. Filter in the hub: chip Entry-level for broker/app purchase, chip Spot CEX for the order book. Perp-DEX does not belong in this comparison - but Perpetual DEXs: Margin, Liquidation & Custody Explained.

Payout to your own wallet

Self-custody requires a product that can transfer the desired coin over the matching network to your own address. Check the purchase object, withdrawal function and contractual terms together. A licence entry alone does not describe these capabilities.

Platform Payout your own wallet (catalog)
21bitcoin Yes · 0.00005 BTC · Lightning
BISON Yes · free
Bitpanda Yes · 0.0001 BTC
Scalable Capital No
Trade Republic Yes · plus network fee
Kraken Yes · 0.00015 BTC · Lightning
OKX Yes · plus network fee
Coinbase Advanced Trade Yes · plus network fee

“Yes” is a catalog feature, not a promise about arrival time, limit or network congestion. “No” at Scalable is the logical consequence of the ETP route: no coin that you send to your own address. If you want self-custody, filter in the hub Payout from your own wallet and deliberately leaves the ETP line there - as a contrast, not as an error in the table.

Lightning is in the features of 21bitcoin and Kraken. This is an in-cell network option, not a quality assessment and not a throughput test.

Tax report DE — formats only

Export formats help you estimate record-keeping work. The following entries come from the August 2026 catalog. You still need to check whether a report covers your entire transaction history, especially when using multiple platforms and your own wallets.

  • Native: BISON, Bitpanda, Trade Republic, Scalable Capital, Coinbase Advanced Trade.
  • CSV: 21bitcoin, OKX.
  • API export: Kraken.

“Native” means: the provider provides a report. “CSV” means: file that you can load into a tool. “API export” means: automated retrieval. None of the three words say whether the export is sufficient for your declaration, what the holding period applies or how an ETP should be treated for tax purposes. You can check this yourself or with a tax advisor. We list the cell, we do not charge any tax.

MiCA/CASP: Regulates ≠ your coins

The license cells reflect the catalog, not a register report or legal advice.

  • CASP license (authorized): 21bitcoin, BISON, Bitpanda, Trade Republic, Kraken, Coinbase Advanced Trade.
  • EU passporting: OKX.
  • Unclear / not proven: Scalable Capital.

Regulates ≠ your coins. BaFin or CASP status says nothing about whether you hold coins. Scalable remains an ETP route: supervision of the broker/bank entity and a security on Bitcoin are compatible with none Payout to your own wallet. An authorized CASP line at BISON or Kraken also does not say that the coins belong to you on-chain as long as they are on the platform. Third-party custody remains third-party custody - in Germany, in Austria and on a US crypto exchange with an EU entity.

Unclear means not documented, not “unregulated” and not “free”. Passporting is not the same cell as having a separate CASP license in each country. Anyone who reads the flag “DE” or “AT” as security is confusing seat with safekeeping.

Proof of Reserves: what a statement covers

According to characteristics, without own certificate examination:

  • Third-party certified: Kraken, Coinbase Advanced Trade.
  • Self-certified: OKX.
  • None: 21bitcoin, BISON, Bitpanda.
  • unknown: Scalable Capital, Trade Republic.

For a reserve statement, check the date, assets examined, liabilities included and the role of the verifying party. A statement with limited scope is not a comprehensive financial audit or a guarantee against insolvency or withdrawal problems. Conversely, a missing catalog entry does not establish misconduct.

Fiat, seat, everyday life

SEPA is common in the Germany, Austria and Switzerland section of the table. According to characteristics, 21bitcoin, BISON, Bitpanda, Trade Republic, Kraken, OKX and Coinbase Advanced Trade lead a SEPA line (partially plus instant or card). Scalable Capital: SEPA only — Bank transfer, without the card/instant variants of the neighboring lines.

Seat according to features:

  • Germany: BISON, Trade Republic, Scalable Capital.
  • Austria: 21bitcoin, Bitpanda.
  • International CEX lines sit differently: Kraken with US information plus EU entity Ireland, Coinbase Advanced Trade with US information plus EU entity Luxembourg, OKX with Malta (EU entity).

Location can influence language, contacts and contractual arrangements. For your residence, the authorized contractual entity and products actually available also matter. Germany, Austria and Switzerland do not form a single authorization area. Check conditions for your country on the specific product page.

How to filter in the hub

  1. Open that Crypto exchange comparison.
  2. chip Entry-levelif you want broker/app with spread. chip Spot CEXif you want an order book. Perp DEX as long as you compare spot or broker.
  3. Read the column Cost model before the cost number: spread, spread plus flat, order book.
  4. Read Order types, before forcing Scalable into the same tray alongside Kraken.
  5. Hook Payout from your own wallet, if self-custody is the condition - Scalable then predictably falls out.
  6. German tax report only as a format filter (native / CSV / API export), not as a seal of quality.
  7. Two regional broker rows plus one CEX line into the tray. Eight columns at once create fog, no knowledge.
  8. Do not read “unknown” as null. The TR cost line is the teaching case.

Example paths (no ranking)

Check feature status against the catalog. The paths are filter sketches, not an editorial shortlist and not an award.

Path A — regional broker, spread and wallet withdrawal

Sketch: Filter broker / entry · payout from your own wallet · Perp.
Example: BISON · Bitpanda · 21bitcoin
Cost according to characteristics in the EUR 1,000 scenario: EUR 12.50 / EUR 14.90 / EUR 14.90 Spread. Tax report: native / native / CSV. Seat: DE / AT / AT.

Path B — Bitcoin-only regional broker

Sketch: Asset column narrow (Bitcoin only), not “better”.
Example: 21bitcoin · Contrast BISON or the CEX ramp Kraken (Payout yes · 0.00015 BTC · Lightning).
21bitcoin remains Bitcoin-only with spread; Kraken remains an order book. Same coin, different contract.

Path C — International Order Book, Taker Rate

Sketch: Filter CEX / Spot CEX · Order book cost model · Perp.
Example: OKX · Coinbase Advanced Trade · Kraken
Catalog scenario EUR 1,000: EUR 1.00 · EUR 6.00 · EUR 8.00 (Taker). Tax report: CSV / native / API export. PoR: self-certified / third-party attested / third-party attested.

Path D — everyday securities instead of spot

Sketch: consciously none payout filter; Read order type cell first.
Example: Scalable Capital next to a spot broker with withdrawal, for example Trade Republic or BISON.
Scalable: ETP, payout no, SEPA only, MiCA unclear, costs EUR 10.89 in the 1.000-€ scenario. TR: App orders, payout yes plus network fee, tax report native, cost line unknown. BISON: Spread 1.25%, withdrawal free, CASP authorized. Three everyday lives, one table.

In practice: assess two providers for the same purchase

First decide whether you want to hold Bitcoin in your own wallet or buy a security in a securities account. Then compare two offerings for the same euro amount: payment route, confirmed purchase quote, additional costs and documented exit route. Use the historical catalog for orientation and current provider terms for the decision.

Match the name of your contractual entity against the relevant register information. A familiar brand name is insufficient. Then separately check technical functions, transaction exports and customer support for your residence.

Frequently asked questions

Is a regional broker safer than a foreign centralized exchange?

Not automatically. Counterparty, custody and payout are in the cells — not in the flag. CASP in Germany or Austria does not replace withdrawal or an order book.

Do I buy Bitcoin from Scalable Capital?

According to features, no: broker orders on crypto ETPs, no native spot order book. You buy a security on Bitcoin. Payouts to your own wallet are not provided.

Why is Trade Republic missing from the cost table?

The cell is unknown, therefore no cost line for TR. SEPA, native tax reports and app orders remain comparable - without a made-up number.

Does CASP mean I hold coins?

No. Regulates ≠ your coins. BaFin or CASP status says nothing about coin ownership. Scalable is the teaching case: ETP, no wallet payout, license cell unclear or banking supervision of the entity — three different statements.

Is a low taker rate automatically cheaper than a spread?

Only if you compare the same product. Order book taker and app spread are different cost models. The methodology calculates a scenario and does not select the cheapest provider.

What does tax report “native”, CSV or API export mean?

There are export formats in the features. No statement about accuracy, completeness or your tax return. No tax advice in this text.

Is Proof of Reserves enough as proof of security?

No. Third-party attested, self-attested, none or unknown are transparency labels. They do not replace payout, counterparty risk and your own review.

Can I withdraw to my own wallet from every regional provider?

No. Scalable: no. BISON, 21bitcoin, Bitpanda, Trade Republic: yes, with different fee cells. Always read the line.

Does the regional broker versus CEX comparison name a winner?

No. See Methodology: Crypto Exchanges. You sort. We do not award grades.

What differentiates the broker chip from an international CEX?

The chip Entry-level or the broker filter (platform_type=broker) shows providers with app purchases and documented spreads. The Spot CEX shows the order book. Same table, two contracts: spread in the app against maker/taker. Perp-DEX does not belong in either chip.

Does relay come back into the comparison?

No. Relay is not retrieved. Faded or detached marks do not belong in this live edit. The catalog lists the current broker and CEX lines - Relai is not one of them.

Why compare regional brokers and centralized exchanges in one table?

Because you're supposed to put the cells next to each other, not because they're the same product. Cost model, order type, payout and tax report format remain readable separately. A “DE” or “AT” flag makes an ETP not a coin and a taker set not a spread.

Crypto assets are subject to high risks, including total loss. Not investment, tax or legal advice. Characteristics information follows the catalog - status 2026-08-15.
